REPAIR accelerates the development, testing, approval and implementation of treatments that enhance recovery after stroke. It brings together the three groups that decide whether a therapy reaches patients: academia, industry, and government regulators and funders.
Acute stroke therapies can be remarkably effective, but only around 1 in 10 US stroke patients are able to receive them, and roughly half of those treated still live with significant long-term disability. New interventions for neural repair and rehabilitation are needed. REPAIR extends the STAIR® Consensus Initiative, whose recommendations, published in Stroke, set benchmarks for acute stroke therapy development.
Academia, FDA and NIH, and the pharmaceutical and device industries in one room.
Working groups produce recommendations on trial design, devices, drugs and biologics.
Current and emerging research on repair, plasticity and rehabilitation therapeutics.
Consensus manuscripts published for the field, with participants offered authorship.
Stroke recovery and rehabilitation trials are getting harder to design and run. Patient selection methods are advancing quickly, treatment effects must be separated from standard-of-care rehabilitation, and endpoint selection balances competing priorities. Together these drive accrual, power, sample size and cost. REPAIR addresses them directly.
A shared view of the science, regulatory landscape and opportunities in therapies targeting repair, rehabilitation and recovery. Opens with the keynote, “The next frontier in stroke recovery”.
Three working groups develop recommendations, then reconvene in plenary where workshop leaders present. Writing committees produce the REPAIR consensus paper.
